What Everyone Should Know About Car Accidents

1. Do Not Leave the Scene

If you are involved in a pedestrian, motorcycle or automobile accident, call the police and report the accident immediately. Reside at the scene of the accident until the police arrive, investigate the accident, and advise you to leave. In some states, leaving the scene of an accident is a crime that may result in criminal charges.
 

2. Obtain All Involved Drivers’ Information

If you are ever involved in an accident, be sure to obtain pertinent information from the other drivers involved. You should be prepared to obtain the driver’s name, address, driver's license number and vehicle license plate number.

3. Obtain the name and badge number of the investigating police officer


Ask the investigating police officer for a business card in which his full name, badge number, police department and incident report number are included. This will make obtaining the police report easier for you.

4. Note the Location of the Accident


You may also want to note the time of day the accident occurred, the conditions of the roadway, the posted speed limit, the presence of traffic control devices, and weather conditions.

5. Note How the Accident Occurred


It is always a good idea to take written notes of exactly how the accident took place, the vehicles involved in the accident, their directions of travel, as well as the time the accident occurred. If litigation results, your written notes may prove to be extremely helpful when pleading or defending your case.
